Chapter 11

Poison

IN THE cover of night, Royal Guards open the gates of Aletheia Gnosis without question upon seeing King Asa. With the general and king leading, we dart through the gates, halting alongside each other at the west end of the building to tie our horses in line with many others belonging to members of The Axiom Unit. We follow King Asa to the front doors and every muscle in my body tenses. I’ve only been inside the building twice. The first time, I don’t remember because I was recovering from the beating I took from the eight soldiers that came in the night. I was in and out of consciousness then. I only remember flashes of what the inside looks like. The second time, Elijah had brought me here for dinner to show me what would be my new home once I married him. That is definitely not happening now.

Modesto swings the glass doors open. A cold gust kisses my face. Passing the threshold, I steel myself for the prospect ahead. The East Wing is just as I remember, overflowing with flora, a few beautiful fountains, and wooden bridges to cross garden areas. The glass ceiling allows the moon’s glow to blanket the garden. It’s a vison I would expect to see in Elora, not in the middle of an Oberon building. Modesto leads the king over a short bridge, with Levi and me trailing behind. Over the bridge, we ascend the winding staircase spiraling upward. It twists around the center of the building to the very top. Lights of electricity suspend from the apex, brightening the interior. I bristle at the sight. How could Aletheia Gnosis have electricity, but the rest of Oberon does not? The fact that The Axiom Unit has been keeping technology to themselves is despicable.

Our boots thud in unison as Modesto takes a left on the sixth floor. King Asa stops at a steel door and places his hand on the access panel built into the wall. It illuminates his hand before the light disappears from the frame. The steel door hisses open, revealing what Elijah called an elevator. King Asa and the general step inside, then turn to face us.

Levi stops in the threshold, “What is this?”

The men step to either side of the room. Modesto presents a hand for us to enter, “This is an elevator. It leads to every floor in the building.”

I add, “It moves quickly, so hold the rail.”

Levi follows me inside, both of us rigid with the proximity of our enemies. We each grip the rail with one hand. King Asa reaches for the panel lined with illuminated buttons inside the elevator. He pushes a button, and the steel door slides close. Our reflections distort in the metal. The elevator hisses like its breathing as it moves. My stomach pushes into my lungs in an instant, then drops back into place. The door sighs open and Modesto leads us out into a hallway. I follow the men with Levi at my side.
